Pneumonia is currently the 6th most common cause of death in the United States. As such there are many high profile people and celebrities who have contracted the disease. Some have been open with their struggles and experiences with the disease, while others have kept the infections relatively private.
Fred Astaire was an American dancer of both stage and film who is best known for a number of successful musical comedy films in which he starred with Ginger Rogers. The actor was hospitalized in 1987 at the age of 88 for a bad cold. After 10 days in the hospital the cold unfortunately had turned into Pneumonia and Astaire passed away. This death highlights the severity of the disease in the elderly, and could have been exasperated by a long hospital stay.
